Silverlight Version

Part of the Trans Pennine Trail
My 'get fit' campaign took me to Stairfoot and a walk along part of the Trans Pennine heading into Barnsley. Dave Cherry wrote and performed a song about the roundabout that can be seen from the two bridges, (see link below). The route I took was the old LNER railway that led into Barnsley. Along the way and on the right there is still part of the old canal visible.
Carrying on you go under the bridge over which is Oaks lane. There is now a choice of directions to go. Left takes you under the railway and back to Doncaster Road, low side of the Oaks Memorial. Go right and you can then walk up onto the old slag heap, or pit stack. You can get some good views of Barnsley from here. Back down from the summit and walk along the footpath there. This footpath takes you towards what remains of Barnsley Main Colliery. Walking to the right back on Oaks lane you can see some old rail tracks in the road. These tracks I think went over the Dearne valley towards Monk Bretton.
My journey continued left down Tank Lane, and then right onto Grange Lane. Had I gone left first I could have wondered around the remains of Monk Bretton Priory. I cheated and drove there in the car.
