Just Ask Jeeves

Parts of a Ship

The Left (4 letters) hand side of a ship is called the Port (4 letters). If the left is port then the right must be starboard.
Another way is to remember There is
port left in the bottle. Since port the drink, is also coloured red, this tells you the colour of the light on the port side.
The head of the ship is the bow, try to remember someone bowing their head.
The rear of the ship is called the
Aft, since a ship moves forward normally the rear comes After the front

People live in a place called Hull, hence the hull is where the people are on a ship i.e. the body of the ship

It is  not right for ships to head towards each other. Since it is not right then it must be left. So to avoid collisions both ships steer to the left or to port.
