Log for 04 October 2004Started my new post today as an Infrastructure technician. The role of an Infrastructure technician is to support the manufacturing centres. First priority was to learn how to check the boiler site glasses and blow the sight glasses down. Large boilers can be very dangerous, in that they can explode if not looked after properly. On entering a boiler house the sight glasses should be the first thing to look at. These tell you visually that there is sufficient water in the boiler. To verify that the sight glasses are reading correctly, then by UK law these must be checked. I use plural because there are two sight glasses. A procedure called sight glass blow down checks that the pipes etc have no blockages that could give a false reading. Three handles are provided for this purpose. In normal operation all handles are set vertical. Starting from the bottom all the valves are set horizontal
