TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids, this is the amount of solids that are dissolved in the water. When steam is generated and used, dissolved solids are left behind. Because some steam is lost then the loss needs to be topped up. Hence the concentrations of solids will increase.
Some of the boiler water is released and this will effectively lower the TDS, this is automatically controlled by a Spirax Sirco device. A sample of the boiler water is taken and the level of TDS checked and the Spirax Sirco device is calibrated based upon this setting.
