This is one of three filtration processes that can be found used in an aquarium. Waste generated by fish and uneaten food will break down and produce ammonia. Certain bacteria like Nitrosomonas convert the ammonia into nitrites which is then converted by another bacteria like Nitrospira into nitrates. The nitrate being removed with each water change.
