Understanding Transistors

The following assumes you have already learnt about transistors but have not fully understood.

Transistor Operation
A transistor consists of a base, collector, and emitter. Trying to visualize electrons is difficult, so I use a night club. The rules of the night club require that a member must sign in 100 guests no more no less. The members enter through an entrance called the base, the guests enter through an entrance called an emitter. The night club is so big that the members entrance can allow 30 members to be admitted at the same time, hence requiring that 3000 guest can be allowed to enter all at the same time.

If no members are available then guests cannot enter. If 30 members now appear, then 3000 guests can enter. This is the transistor as a switch.

If a varying flow of members enter the night club. The guests entering the night club will also vary but a a much greater rate. This how the transistor forms an amplifier.
