Wednesday the 28/06/2006 and my birthday surprise was a golfing lesson with Mike the Golf Pro at my local driving range. Pam the owner of the driving range was excited at the secret plot to get there at 13:00.

Since I had not expected a lesson I had taken two clubs that I could not use. A one wood and a three wood. Mike explained that I had taken the two that are the hardest to master, no wonder I could not use them.

Mike explained that the irons have differing angles and that the higher the number, the shorter the shaft length. He explained that in the beginning, a middle of the road iron is ideal to learn with. I was in luck since his bag he had a left handed 6 iron, the lesson could proceed.

Mike brought out a training golf club that he explained gave the ideal finger placing around the shaft. How strange it felt, my right thumb slightly to the left of centre, the fingers gripping behind. The left hand palm covers the right thumb, then the right thumb is just slightly to the right of centre. The little finger of the left hand nestles in between the index and middle finger of the right hand.

Mike sent three balls with his 6 iron and stated how far each one would go, 60 metre, 100 metre and 150 metres and they were perfect, and only travelling about a metre from where they bounced. He made it look so effortless.

It was time to get into the swing of things. I only managed to get the swing right a few times, but when I did, what a difference. The ball lofted and even for me only rolled a metre from where it bounced. Funny how the ball sounds once you hit it right.

Mike watched me for a few more drives and pointed out why I was not hitting the ball correctly. Most common was me trying to send the ball around the globe. Relaxing into the swing and keeping my right hand straight resulting in 100 metre drives.

After booking another lesson for the following Wednesday I finished the balls off. Some good but most poor.

Mike in line with other Web Pros that you can find online advise that you to get lesson early and I can see why. I have not had time to pick up bad habits.

How did I perform after my first lesson
