Railway Historical Notes
Historical Notes
The rail network in the UK was created by different companies
all with a desire to link to the Capital London. This resulting in many lines
terminating in London and other major cities at different stations.
Doctor Beeching was called in by the Government in the mid
1960's to revamp British Rail. 2000 miles of track were closed to try on
concentrate on the mainlines. I heard that at a meeting in York in the mid
60's, Dr Beeching likened his proposals to that of cutting out the dead wood on
a rose to make it flourish. Further to this a railway worker allegedly said
"Without the streams feeding a river it will dry up".
The Woodhead line crossing over the Pennines and linking
Manchester to Sheffield had the last passenger train withdrawn in 1970. The line
from Penistone to Hatfield closed 17th July 1981.
