Railways (Phoenix)

Introduction

Is the golden age of the railway really over, are we to see an end to the parallel lines of steel that helped put the Great into Great Britain?
If this, and the subsequent pages on my concepts are correct then I think a new era of rail could be coming out of the ashes left by the steam locomotives hence I have called the concept the subtitle of Phoenix.
Having discussed the concepts with a lot of people from differing backgrounds they seem on the surface at least to be sound. If on reading this you can either find a flaw, agree, or there is an area you require clarifying then my email is a the bottom of the page.

Concept Bulleted list

Totally electrify the rail network

bullet

Expand the rail network, increasing interconnectivity

bullet

Reopen certain closed routes and extend branch lines to other network sections where feasible.

bullet

Interlink London stations.

bullet

Offer cheaper night time freight services by using off peak electricity tariffs.

bullet

Introduce slower trains collecting at intermediate stations operating in parallel to Intercity trains.

Within the timetable allow certain Intercity trains to collect passengers on route prior to arriving at an Intercity start point.

Introduce motorway to rail terminals to allow similar trains used to carry cars and lorries through the Channel tunnel to reduce motorway congestion.

bullet

Consider installing wind generators on suitable sites to supply power to reduce operating costs.

bullet

Introduce computer farms to calculate route availability and control to allow greater flexibility of the network, at the same time decentralising control.

bullet

Fund research to create a reduction in maintenance costs needed to operate the network.

bullet

Reduce the number of changes required that a passenger needs to make on a journey.

bullet

Investigate regenerative braking, with respect to neutral sections on the network.
