Poka-Yoke

Poka-yoke pronounced "POH-kah YOH-keh" means "making fail-safe" or "mistake-proofing". Originally Baka-yoke which means "idiot proofing" but was changed to it's milder form. You might be interested to know it came from Shigeo Shingo for use in the Toyota Production System.

My BMW is designed such that I have to depress the clutch pedal before the engine starts. This prevents me from jumping forward if I were in gear.

Take the now standard 3.5" floppy disc, it is designed to prevent you from inserting upside down.

The text I am writing at the moment is being checked by a spell checker, should I make a mistake, a red wiggly line appears under the word.

Books

Poka-yoke: Improving Product Quality by Preventing Defects by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbuna

ZQC: Source Inspection and the Poka-Yoke System (Hardcover) by Shigeo Shingo, A.P. Dillon (Translator)
